About Phoenix Sun

History:

In 1986, there was a dire need for an affordable newspaper within the Indian community. This prompted Vijay Maharaj, CEO of The Rising Sun Newspapers to launch a free newspaper to document, profile and broadcast the latest news and advertising specials. Presently, our free community papers are delivered to every door weekly. In KwaZulu-Natal, we serve the communities of Chatsworth, Phoenix, Verulam and Tongaat, Merebank, Overport and Mid-South Coast. In Gauteng, we reach out to the communities of Lenasia, Fordsburg and Mayfair and Laudium. The Rising Sun Newspaper has become a powerful medium since its inception and continues to earn the respect among advertisers as well as readers.

Mission:

Our motto is to work towards a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic South Africa. We believe that education is the weapon to fight ignorance, poverty and unemployment.

Aim:

Our dynamic team of journalists strive to provide breaking news with their cutting edge journalism skills. We continue to highlight achievements, address social issues and document the development of our communities.

Social responsibility:

Over the years our company has formed a strong partnership with various community-based organisations, by providing assistance financially and through media coverage. Some of which include, Rotary clubs, Umzinto Child Welfare, Phoenix Child Welfare, Chatsworth Child Welfare, Aryan Benevolent Homes, Chatsworth Hospice, Community Care Centre, Cheshire Homes, Senior Citizens Clubs, Cerebral Palsy Association, Welbedacht Compassion Centre, Natal Blind and Deaf Society, DAFTA, Boys Town, Croftdene Women’s Empowerment Group.
