A 34-year-old man was killed while his girlfriend survived an armed robbery on Hezelmere Road in Verulam, over the weekend.
While investigations into the incident continue, local security company, Reaction Unit South Africa issued a statement.
Reaction officers were called out to the scene on Saturday night at about 8:27pm after being informed of the crime.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the SAPS in attendance as well.
“A man was found lying in the roadway bleeding excessively from penetrating wounds to his face and chest. He was assessed by medics and found to have been fatally injured in the shooting,” the report indicated.
It was established that the victim and his girlfriend were walking together when they were approached by three men.
One of the suspects withdrew a shot gun and instructed the couple to hand over their valuables.
“The couple attempted to flee when the man fell. He was then shot at least two times. About 27 metal pellets struck the deceased in the chest and face,” the report further pointed out.
The suspects then robbed the woman of her handbag before they fled the scene on foot. The deceased’s girlfriend was not injured.
