It is that of time of the year again when Hindu’s fast for Purattasi. It is customary for Hindus to be strictly vegetarian. It is not only abstaining from meat dishes, the consumption of liquor and smoking involves a strict code of conduct.
We also find as a community, we show discipline and self-sacrifice.
Thousands of devotees will not only be falling at the feet of supposed religious teachers and leaders, especially during this period, sadly some of these unscrupulous individuals manipulate the masses for their own pecuniary benefit.
It is very important to remember a fundamental Hindu teaching that blessing comes from your mother or elders first, is simply not given the due importance.
Some religious leaders, who in my opinion are the cancer in our society, are not doing enough to instill in our society any morals, values and ethics.
Let us not forget the hypocrites in our own society who purport to be god fearing by fasting and prayer, but at the same breadth have absolute no respect for family, elders and more important for the poor.
My question is will fasting and prayer benefit these hypocrites? My answer is definitely no. It is important that as parents, we teach our children of our rich culture and values, which is sadly lacking.
Our religious organisations ought to be our moral compass and it is now important for our people to start to look very carefully at where our religious organisations are and start to demand that these organisations and their leaders be the bastion of what is morally, ethically and religiously correct.
It is my prayer that all devotees do receive what they seek during this time of prayer.
I am a firm believer and subscribe of the saying ‘The hands that serve are holier than the lips that pray.’
