Toys R Us calls on young pet lovers

A young pet lover with her own Rescue Runt.

Toys R Us South Africa is calling on all young pet lovers to support a cash-strapped Durban animal shelter through its national Rescue Runts mission.

This novel initiative, set out by Toys R Us stores nationwide will see R10 donated from every sale of the popular Rescue Runts toy pet, to PACT (the Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment) dedicated to providing care and medical treatment for animals in the Phoenix area.

The adoptable, lovable plush rescue puppies have been so popular in the international market that it sold out after just one week of its debut.

“We are thrilled to bring this adored product to our customers and excited that so many kids are being introduced to the concept of rescue animals through this novel line of plush,”  said Nicole Annells, marketing manager of Toys R Us and Babies R Us SA.

This adorable plush range includes Husky, German Shepherd, Spaniel, and Spotty breeds. These pets arrive messy and with downturned ears, dirty paws, and a bandage, appealing to children’s instinct to nurture them through rescue play.

Kids, in turn, are meant to use the included grooming kit to inspect the pet plush for fleas, clean its paws, wipe away the pup’s tears, and brush its fur.

“The product encourages children to adopt and rescue shelter pets, shower them with love and understand the responsibility of constant care and maintenance when it comes to pets,” added Annells.

She encouraged parents and children to shop for a worthy cause this August, adding that R10 will be donated to PACT from every purchase of Rescue Runts.

“Too many cats and dogs in South Africa do not have a loving home or even the basics like a warm place to sleep and something to eat. Animal welfare organizations, such as PACT, are dedicated to making a positive difference to these animals and with your support; we can make an even greater impact,” she said.

To date, PACT has rescued approximately 12 000 animals, sterilized 6 500 over the past six years and feed 80 animals daily.

PACT volunteer, Nevita Ramnunan, expressed immense gratitude to the Toys R Us team adding that they could reach out to more animals in need.

“We actually cannot put our gratitude into words to be honest. We are extremely thankful, appreciative and grateful that Toys R Us SA has chosen to help us this month.” she said.

“We have sleepless nights thinking about how we would pay for kennels or food or vet bills. The monies raised by this partnership – will feed many, save many and allow us to pay towards our debt. We have sadly been forced to turn away many cases as a result of this. We are hopeful that the proceeds of this partnership will help us reduce our bills – allowing us to help animals in need again,” added Ramnunan.

Help them this year to make a difference to animals in need! With your help, they can have many happier and healthier pets.
