The three men, who were apprehended after allegedly opening a false case at Tongaat SAPS, made their first appearance in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, on Monday.
Provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said that the suspects, aged between 18 and 22, appeared on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
“They were released on R500, 00 bail. The case was remanded until September 7 for further investigation,” he explained.
Police reports indicated that on August 3 at about 8:45pm, the driver of a VW Polo vehicle and his two passengers were travelling along Watson Highway when they were stopped by an unknown individual, who wanted a lift.
The hitchhiker allegedly pointed a weapon at the driver, who was instructed to drive towards the Umdloti area. The alleged hijacker reportedly fled the scene and according to the driver, nothing was taken.
After an investigation by detectives, it was established that all three men were lying and had opened a false case of hijacking.
