Three suspects have been placed behind bars and charged with defeating the ends of justice after they allegedly opened a false hijacking case at Tongaat SAPS.
The arrested suspects, aged between 18 and 22, were due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, yesterday.
Provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said, “According to the suspects, on August 3 at about 8:45pm, the driver of a VW Polo vehicle and his two passengers were travelling along Watson Highway when they were stopped by an unknown individual, who wanted a lift.”
The hitchhiker allegedly pointed a weapon at the driver, who was instructed to drive towards the Umdloti area. The alleged hijacker reportedly fled the scene and according to the driver, nothing was taken.
“Police obtained sworn statements from all three occupants of the VW Polo, who stated that they were hijacked,” he added.
Following an investigation by detectives, it was established that all three men were lying and had opened a false case of hijacking.
“This is once again an indication that our police officers will not condone the misuse of police resources through the opening of false cases,” concluded Lt Col Zwane.
