VIDEO: ‘Rapist stepfather’ denied bail following appearance in Verulam court

Residents rejoiced outside the court after being informed that the accused was denied bail.

The 43-year-old man, accused of holding his stepdaughter captive and raping her 900 times, was denied bail in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, earlier today. The child is believed to have been sexually abused since she was five-years-old.

Magistrate Irfaan Khalil remanded the accused to Westville Prison in the interest of the witnesses’ safety. The investigating officer in this matter, W/O Nevarge Lutchminarain, informed the court that the accused had threatened the child and RUSA officers in the presence of four police officers.

A report issued by Reaction Unit South Africa stated, “The suspect is facing ten charges relating to sexual crimes with a child.  Porn videos, vibrators and dildos were found at his home. The state also alleged that the stepfather forced the child to watch him have sexual intercourse with another woman and that he forced the child to perform oral sex on him.”

Medical reports submitted has confirmed that the child was penetrated.

“A part of a protection order issued by the Pinetown Court in 2015 was read out. In the application for the order, the former girlfriend of the accused stated that she feared for her life and the life of her mother after the man had repeatedly threatened to take her to a remote place and kill her,” the report alleged.

The legal aid lawyer acting for the accused repeatedly pointed out to the court that RUSA officers had assaulted the suspect during his arrest and had suffered extensive injuries.

Magistrate Irfaan Khalil said that there was no evidence to support the suspect’s version that he was assaulted by RUSA officers.

“He further stated that if the accused was severely injured, he should not have forcefully left the hospital and fled to Phoenix where he was re-arrested by RUSA,” the statement added.
