Historic temple celebrates Youth Day

Meals being prepared for last year’s Youth Day celebration.

The Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum has pulled out all stops and shifted into top gear to ensure that this year’s June 16 youth festival is the grandest the community has seen.

The annual event hosted jointly by the forum, Tongaat Panthers Athletic Club, eThekwini Municipality Community Participation and KZN Liquor Authority brings the entire community together for a day of sports, fun and enjoyment.

The morning starts off with a mass yoga session and then proceeds to the 5km fun run/walk. On return a full programme of music, sports and novelty items for the youth and seniors unfolds and culminates with sumptuous lunch at 12.30pm.

Chairman of the forum, Brother Vedananda explained that the event speaks to the ideals of social cohesion, unity, fitness and community development.

This year, the legacy and life of Tata Madiba, together with the inspirational message of oneness by Swami Vivekananda at Chicago World Parliament of Religions, will complement the festivities of the centenary anniversary of Isenembe Sri Veeraboga Vasantharaya Temple.

He added that 2500 participants are expected to take to the road this year. The underlying theme of the event is ‘No to underage drinking’.

The organisers of the event welcome all to join the yoga and walk/ run as a way of community fitness and take home the life giving and profound messages from the lives of our great heroes.

The Arise Awake Youth Festival will take place at the Outspan Grounds in Tongaat on Saturday, June 16, with registration at 7am.

All those attending can enjoy refreshments, breakfast, lunch, music, fun, games, sport and safe secure parking.

Participants of the 5km run/walk will receive a T-shirt and medal. For further information, contact Sugie Govender on 073-356-5918, Vedananda Govindsamy on 083-384-0190, Yogan Naidoo on 081-354-9245 or email [email protected]
