Justice was served when the Ntuzuma Regional Court sentenced 27-year-old Nkanyiso Mthembu to 15 years for kidnapping, 10 years for theft of motor vehicle and life imprisonment for murder, last week.
Provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said that on March 25, last year, Mthembu visited the victim at her house in Lindelani to request cash that she promised to give to him.
“The victim was related to the accused and he normally helped to drive her vehicle,” he explained.
When the accused could not get the money from the victim, Sizle Veen (61), an argument broke out and she was assaulted and tied up with an electrical cord.
She was put in the vehicle and the accused drove around with her towards Windermere in Durban where he attempted to withdraw cash from her account.
The accused further drove towards the Burman bushes where he dumped her body.
“A case of murder, kidnapping and theft of vehicle was opened for further investigation. The vehicle was later recovered on California Road,” said Lt Col Zwane.

He added, “The dedicated detectives, assigned to the case, followed up on information that led to identifying the accused, who was arrested on March 28, 2017. He was found in possession of deceased’s bank cards, which were already cut into pieces, and a cellphone.”
The accused made several court appearances while in custody. Bail was successfully opposed by detectives investigating the case.
