Glenhaven Secondary School bid farewell to yet another seasoned teacher at the end of April 2018. Mr Mike Kaniappen said farewell to his fellow colleagues and pupils at a special assembly held in his honour, last Wednesday.

He started his teaching career in 1978 and served the Department of Education for a period spanning over four decades under different education departments including the Department of Indian Education, House of Delegates and finally leaving under the Department of Basic Education.

Kanniappen’s first placement was in Pietermaritzburg at Woodlands Secondary before being seconded to Cape Town from where he spent a short stint at Protea Secondary in Chatsworth before ending up at Glenhaven Secondary which he has been serving for the past 31 years.

Kanniappen spoke proudly of his charges over the years at Glenhaven, boasting that many of them have become successful in the medical, engineering and education professions.

He remembered with nostalgia the Geography excursions organised for pupils to Drakensburg, Eastern Transvaal and other areas of educational interest.

Principal, Mr Philip Reddy, commended the efforts of Mr Kanniappen and informed pupils that they should consider themselves lucky to have been taught by a teacher with 41 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge.

For his efforts at the school for the past 31 years, Mr Kanniappen was presented with a token of appreciation by the principal, with an inscription expressing the school’s gratitude.

Reddy also wished Mr Kanniappen well in his retirement on behalf of the pupils, staff and SGB. Mr Kanniappen wished both pupils and the staff well in all their future endeavours.
