Life imprisonment for accused who killed his accomplice

The Verulam Regional Court convicted and sentenced Menzi Jack Mtsholweni (25) to two life terms for separate murders as well as an additional 45 years for robbery.

Provincial police spokeswoman, Cpt Nqobile Gwala said that in May 2016, the accused and his roommate, known as Dickies, robbed and killed 40-year-old Neren Harridus.

The victim was found with a stab wound to his neck in Belvedere. His cellphone was also missing.

“A case of murder was opened at Tongaat SAPS for further investigation. Three weeks later, 28-year-old Dickies was found dead with multiple stab wounds. He was also found dead in the Belvedere area and his belongings were missing,” she said.

Another murder case was opened. Mtsholweni was arrested and linked to both murders, according to Cpt Gwala. “Extensive police investigation revealed that Mtsholweni and Dickies were fighting over Neren’s cellphone when the accused fatally stabbed him and robbed him of his belongings. The accused was kept in custody throughout the trial,” she added.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for each murder and 45 years for two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. KwaZulu-Natal’s acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa commended the detective for solving the cases and sending the accused to jail indefinitely.
