Phoenix jewellery store robbers arrested following shootout

Six armed suspects, who stormed a Phoenix jewellery store and fled with jewellery, wrist watches and cash, were apprehended following a shootout with police near KwaMashu, yesterday.

Provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said that on February 11 at about 12:30pm, a group of armed suspects entered the jewellery store at a mall in Phoenix and robbed the store of jewellery, wrist watches and cash before fleeing the scene in two getaway vehicles.

“Police were immediately alerted and spotted one of the vehicles and gave chase. While on the M25 highway near KwaMashu, it is alleged that the suspects opened fire on police officers. A shootout ensued and six suspects were arrested, including two, who were wounded,” he explained.

The wounded suspects were taken to hospital where they are currently under police guard. Some of the items taken during the robbery were also recovered.

The suspects were charged for armed robbery and attempted murder. Lt Col Zwane confirmed that a manhunt is currently underway for the suspects who escaped.
