All public have school governing bodies (SGBs) to manage the governance functions of a school. The current SGB was elected in 2015. Their term of office is three years, and hence all public schools need to elect new SGBs in 2018.

The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motsheka, has declared the period March 1 to 31, 2018 as the period for all public schools to conduct their school’s SGB elections. The Government Gazette, Number 0000, declares March to be the period for SGB elections across South Africa.

Governing bodies are made up of the vital stakeholders at a public school. The principal, parents, educators, members of staff (non-educators) and pupils (at secondary schools) are the members of the SGB.  Each constituency is elected from representatives from that constituency.

It is important for parents to attend the election meeting, and try to ensure that the required quorum of 15 percent is achieved at the first meeting.

In this way parents show an interest in developing their children’s school and thus provide better infrastructure and better education for all pupils. Even if parents are not elected onto the SGB they shouldn’t feel rejected, they can serve on the various sub-committees of the SGB.  Each has a vital role to play in the development of the school.

Schools with SGBs that work with the principal and staff of the school are progressive schools. Parents play a vital role in developing a school.

They come with a wide range of experiences and talents that complement the professional expertise of the principal and staff.  Parents shouldn’t feel that they are not competent enough to serve on the SGB.

Their talents and expertise will be exposed through various developmental workshops. It is up to the Department of Basic Education and the principal to capacitate the members of the SGB to fulfil their obligations to the school as per the requirements of the South African School Act (SASA).

Working together as a team ensures that the child ultimately receives quality education in the public schooling sector.  This is the basic aim of all the stakeholders involved in the school. Comments and input can be forwarded to [email protected]
