Verulam drive-by shooting leaves one dead, three injured

One person was killed and three others injured following a drive-by shooting on Ireland Street in the Verulam CBD on Friday night. Local security company, Reaction Unit South Africa responded to the scene just around 9pm after receiving multiple calls from the public, reporting automatic gunfire at the taxi rank.

“Upon arrival, it was established that four taxi bosses were at the rank on Ireland Street when the occupants of a red VW Golf 7 opened fire on them with high calibre weapons,” a report issued by RUSA alleged.

One person was shot in the head and died at the scene. Two other people were shot multiple times and were transported to hospital in a critical condition.

The fourth victim was shot twice but managed to flee to the Metro Police station on Wick Street. “The motive behind the shooting is believed to be taxi-related, however, this is yet to be confirmed. Several spent high calibre cartridges were recovered at the scene,” the report further stated. Police are investigating further.
