Gayathri Peedam hosts sixth annual awards function

Verulam Secondary School principal, Siva Govender, was the keynote speaker at the awards.

The classy Kraydeb Conference Centre in Everest Heights, Verulam was the venue for the Gayathri Peedam’s sixth annual awards presentation and dinner function on Saturday, January .

The spiritual organisation honoured the academic achievements of the children and young adults of the ashram from grade 0 to post graduate tertiary level.

Devrisha Jhumman (Stanger) and Darren Deeplal (Riverside) who graduated with  BCom (Honours) from UKZN and Varsity College were respectively joined at the podium by Hiresh Ravjee (Glenwood) who obtained a Management degree from Mancosa as the Peedam’s top performers.

The organisation’s ‘Selfless Service’ award acknowledges those who go the extra few kilometres in their efforts to uplift the ashram and the community of Verulam.

The popular Gayathri Peedam awards function also provides a community platform to showcase the proud achievements of the secondary schools in Verulam by honouring the top three pupils and the top three secondary schools in the National Senior Certificate Exams (NSCE) of the previous year.

Verulam Secondary and its pupils once again dominated as top achievers in the 2017 NSCE among the Verulam secondary schools. Emerging giants, Trenance Park Secondary, made its intentions quite clear that in the near future they hope to walk away with the coveted silverware as the top performing schools in the NSCE among the Verulam secondary schools.

Verulam Secondary’s Zakkiya Hoosen, who scored a phenomenal 95.1 percent aggregate in the 2017 NSCE which earned her a second place in the Pinetown District and eighth in KwaZulu-Natal was the toast of the function.

For the first time, the GP awards function showcased the top three grade seven pupils from the following primary schools in the Verulam area:  Dawncrest, Redcliffe, Everest Heights, Verulam, Dianthus and Lotusville.

Siva Govender who was appointed principal of Verulam Secondary in 2016 graced the function as the keynote speaker. Govender is very passionate about his job and has a proud record a community activist in environment awareness programmes and sports development through the Checkout Verulam Falcons Athletic Club and TONVER.

The audience also enjoyed an inspiring address that chronicled Siva Govender’s journey from humble beginnings to a visionary leader of trailblazers Verulam Secondary school. On a lighter note, Henry Ramkissoon, Dingalings’crowd favourite comedian entertained the gathering in a 20 minute comedy slot.
