Chester Wholesale Meat merchandise recovered in Verulam

An abandoned trailer, loaded with a 12 metre shipping container, containing 24 tons of frozen chicken pieces, was recovered on Oakford Road, near Osindisweni Hospital in Verulam on Tuesday.

The trailer was allegedly reported stolen by Chester Wholesale Meat Supply which is one of the largest meat wholesalers in the country. According to Verulam SAPS communications officer, Cpt Henry Kisten, a case of robbery with a firearm was reported at the Umbilo police station.

“After receiving a tip-off, it was established that the stolen goods belonged to Chester Meats Suppliers. The matter was handled by the SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Crime Intelligence. We can confirm that the trailer was left abandoned and no one has been arrested as yet,” said Cpt Kisten.

It is alleged that the recovered chicken pieces amount to about R400, 000. Further allegations are that the contents of the shipping container were imported from Brazil and that the thieves had stolen the wrong trailer as they were intended to steal another one containing dressed poultry. Cpt Kisten could not confirm the allegations.
