Off-duty cop arrests ATM robber

An observant off-duty policeman arrested an ATM robber in the Tongaat CBD on Thursday. It is alleged that Det Cnst Hanesan Naidoo witnessed a man being chased from an ATM while walking on Gopalall Hurbans Road.

The dedicated policeman did not hesitate to investigate this suspicious activity and chased after the suspected criminal which led to the successful apprehension of the perpetrator.

He further interviewed the victim and established that the suspect had stolen a woman’s bank card from the Standard Bank ATM.

Tongaat SAPS corporate communications officer, CptPatrick Ngwane, said the 31-year-old robber was searched and was found in possession of many bank cards which belonged to other victims.

Cpt Ngwane confirmed that a case of theft was opened against the suspect for investigation to be conducted. He was arrested and detained at the Tongaat SAPS police cells.

Investigations revealed that the suspect is part of a syndicate which operates at all bank ATMs. He was later charged accordingly and appeared before the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Station commander, Col Santha Moodley, commended Det Cnst Naidoo for his bravery and his dedication in apprehending the suspect even while off-duty.
