Cash-in-transit suspects killed in shootout

KWAZULU-NATAL: Three cash-in-transit suspects were fatally wounded and a fourth injured during a shootout with police in Appelsbosch, last week. According to provincial police spokesman, Cpt Nqobile Gwala, the group of armed men accosted a cash-in-transit vehicle in Khamanzi Road in an attempt to rob them of cash. Police officers including the National Intervention Unit were also in the area due to a proactive intelligence-driven operation. The super-sleuth officers immediately intervened and were met with gunfire from the suspects, who were travelling in two vehicles.  “Policed returned fire and during the shootout, three suspects were fatally wounded. One suspect was injured and taken to hospital where he remains under police guard. A security guard was also injured when the men opened fire. He sustained a gunshot wound to the hand. Some of the men managed to escape in one of the getaway vehicles during the shootout. Due to the police intervention, no cash was taken and the robbery was prevented,” Cpt Gwala explained.  Police seized three pistols, a rifle and a vehicle used by the criminals following the shootout. The arrested suspect will be charged for attempted robbery, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms. He will appear in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court soon. The acting provincial commissioner, Maj Gen Bheki Langa commended the police officers for their proactive action and bravery while under fire. “Police officers are deployed strategically across the province as part of our festive season operation. Criminals can expect our police officers to respond more speedily and should they shoot at our police officers, they must expect our members to respond accordingly,” he said.

Three men arrested for copper cable theft

NORTH WEST: Three suspects, between the ages of 25 and 29, appeared in the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court on charges of illegal possession of copper cables, last week. The trio’s court appearance came after they were arrested by police officers, who were conducting regular patrol duties. On November 2 at about 4pn, police officers spotted a suspicious vehicle and stopped it. During a search, they found copper cables wrapped on the suspects’ bodies. The recovered copper cable is estimated to be worth R20, 000 and weighs 175, 90kgs. The police also recovered suspected stolen property in the boot of the vehicle.

Police foil armed robbery, two arrested

GAUTENG: Police were praised for their efforts in the fight against crime after they not only managed to foil an armed robbery, but also arrest two suspects and recover rifles. The suspects were arrested in Eden Park for possession of suspected hijacked vehicles, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. It is believed that the suspects were on their way to commit a robbery, when they were stopped by the police. The suspects started shooting at the police who retaliated. One suspect was shot on the lower and upper body and the other suspect was arrested on the spot. An injured suspect was taken to hospital under police guard. Police officers were not injured during the shootout. A search is underway for the remaining suspects, who are still at large.
