Elderly woman (71) assaulted during armed robbery

The suspects broke the front door, entered the home and assaulted the elderly resident.

A 71-year-old woman was assaulted by suspects during an armed robbery at her home on Charnwood Drive in Riyadh, Verulam, last Wednesday.

According to a report issued by Reaction Unit South Africa, they were dispatched to the home at around 9:49am after receiving reports of an armed robbery in progress. Upon arrival at the scene, reaction officers surrounded the home, however, the suspects had already fled the scene.

It was established that four suspects in a silver VW Polo forced open the driveway gate before entering the property. The suspects then broke the front door, entered the home and assaulted the elderly resident. They demanded to know where the safe was and other valuables.

One suspect had a firearm in his possession. The victim began screaming for help, when her grandson, who was in the bathroom at the time, called their neighbour and reported the incident. The neighbour then contacted Reaction Unit South Africa.

The suspects ransacked two bedrooms in the house before stealing a Samsung Smart TV and fleeing the scene. An extensive search was conducted for the suspects, however, no arrests were made. The elderly woman was assessed by medics on scene. She did not sustain any visible injuries and refused hospital treatment.
