Mother accused of killing seven-month-old baby

A woman was arrested after she allegedly accidentally killed her children in the Blackburn area, Verulam on Tuesday, October 7.

It is alleged that she gave her seven-month-old baby and two-year-old Benzene, a flammable substance commonly used as an industrial solvent in paints, varnishes, lacquer thinners, gasoline, in an attempt to heal them of their stomach cramps.

“She gave the seventh-month-old one teaspoon and her two-year-old two teaspoons of benzene to drink as part of tradition or belief that the children will be cured,” said Verulam SAPS communications officer, Cpt Henry Kisten.

It is alleged that the infant died instantly while the two-year-old was admitted in hospital. According to Cpt Kisten, the mother was arrested and charged with murder.

In an unrelated matter in the same area, Verulam SAPS opened an inquest docket into the death of a man who was allegedly burnt to death in his shack.

It is alleged that on Monday, November 7, the man who was living by himself, died when his shack caught alight. “The cause of the fire is still unknown. An inquest docket is being investigated,” confirmed Cpt Kisten.
