Phoenix SAPS is investigating further.

A Phoenix man is facing a charge of defeating the hands of justice after opening a false charge of carjacking recently.

It is alleged that the man had arrived at Phoenix SAPS and alleged that he was robbed of his motor vehicle and requested to open a charge of carjacking. The man alleged that he was throttled and had his hands tied and taken in his vehicle.

He further alleged he was later dropped off and his vehicle was left on the side of the road. He also stated that while seated on the side of the road, he spotted his vehicle, then stopped a security vehicle, asking for assistance to get his vehicle back.

He told the police that he managed to retrieve his vehicle before reporting the incident to the police. Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt Louise Naidoo, said investigations later revealed that the complainant had lied about the carjacking and was charged for defeating the ends of justice.

Condemning the incident, Cpt Naidoo said that opening a false case results in unnecessary police resources being used in order to investigate a matter. “Time and resources are spent on a false case where as there are more serious cases that require police attention,” she said.
