Wife knifed to death in Phoenix

Nadeen Mohammed Shaik was arrested for the murder of his wife.

Neighbours watched in silence, visibly shocked, as a woman’s body was removed from her home on Lenham Drive on Saturday.

The close-knit community gathered around the scene which many described as ‘heinous and too painful’. According to the police, at about 10am, a dispute between a couple turned ugly when the husband, Naeem Sheik (40) stabbed his wife Nadia Mia (35) several times on her chest abdomen and back, resulting in her death.

After perpetrating the murder, Sheik allegedly then drove away in his brother’s Jaguar car which was later recovered in a canal by the police in Wentworth.

The abandoned Jaguar in the Merebank canal and police at the scene.

It is alleged that upon realising what he had done, Sheik, who was believed to be under the influence of drugs attempted to commit suicide, however, this could not be confirmed.

According to Phoenix SAPS communications officer, Cpt Louise Naidoo, information was received that the suspect was at his mother’s house in Lantana Place, Asherville.

“Cpt Pakkiri then arranged a task team from Sydenham and Mayville SAPS and officers proceeded to the said residence where the suspect was placed under arrest,” said Cpt Naidoo.

Disturbed witnesses recounted that they were disturbed by a usual domestic dispute between the couple, but little did they realise that it would go that far.

It emerged that the mother of two was dragged by her hair in view of her neighbours. The perpetrator then stabbed her several times and once he was done, he threw her in a bin placed outside.

Despite pleas by neighbours, begging him to open the gate so they can check on her, the suspect allegedly continued and forcefully carried her inside the house, where she died.

Ward councillor, Sameer Singh, said it is unfortunate that the mother was killed in such a brutal manner just before the celebration of a month that recognises the role of women in societies.

“We strongly condemn the abuse and killing of women and children. We hope that the law authorities will do everything they can to ensure that the perpetrator gets the punishment that he deserves,” he said. Cllr Singh also conveyed his sincere condolences to the bereaved Mia family.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane, said the murder weapon, a knife, was found at the crime scene. “The suspect was arrested at his mother’s house,” said Lt Col Zwane. Sheik was formally charged for the murder on Monday and appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
