House robbery suspect (18) swiftly arrested

An 18-year old suspect was arrested after he stormed into two houses and stole household items including a cellphone in Mabhengwane Road in KwaMashu, last week.

The suspect was apparently armed with a knife. It is alleged that the community mobilised and the suspect was immediately apprehended. He was then handed over to KwaMashu police who took him to the police station for detention.

The stolen items were confiscated and the suspect will be charged for house robbery as well as theft. KwaZulu-Natal’s acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the swift arrest.

“We also applaud the community who did not take the law into their own hands and handed over the suspect to the police after his apprehension. It shows that the community understands that act of vigilantism is a crime and can land them behind bars. The criminals must know that police are always alert and waiting to defend the citizens of this country from any form of criminality,” said Langa.
