If you are a ‘petrol head’ then you already know that there is just something about the fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled nature of car movies that really revs your engine.
Those fearless action heroes, their busty sidekicks and, above all, those custom-made beauties that we all wish we had – yes, it is the cars that we consider the true stars of these movies.
If the cars are good enough, we’ll even forgive a badly written script and a series of horribly acted scenes. Who cares? No one is paying attention to the actors when there is a car in the background anyway. The only time that we cringe is when the busty sidekick tries to seduce the hero by leaning leisurely on the bonnet. When that happens, the only thing on our minds is the paintjob that may have to be re-done.
We’ve compiled a list of the world’s favourite car movies that will be sure to kick your Friday night into high gear.
- The Fast and the Furious Franchise
The ultimate set of movies for car enthusiasts would never be complete without mentioning ‘The Fast and the Furious’ franchise. Having now released eight films since the original’s debut in 2001, the success of the movies has continued to build to epic proportions. Did you know that ‘The Fast and the Furious 7’ managed to accumulate close to R20 billion worldwide at the box office? That’s pretty darn impressive. But what is even more impressive is the list of customised cars driven in each of the films. From the 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse to the 2001 BMW M5, it is no wonder why this movie franchise has car junkies from all over the world wearing muscle t-shirts and pimping their rides.
2.Days of Thunder
The 1990 classic has plenty to offer in terms of vivacious vehicles. To top it all off, the storyline is pretty sweet. Think Top Gun, but with some awesome wheels. While watching the movie, you will witness legendary cars like the 1989 BMW 325is, the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette and the 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix in all of their glory. And oh boy, are they glorious.
3.The Italian Job
Forget about the re-make. The original release in 1969 is where the real beauties can be seen – and, although gorgeous, we’re not talking about Leila Goldoni! The orange Lamborghini Muira in the opening sequence sets the scene for the rest of the film where we bear witness to a variety of drool-worthy motor cars. The film is ideal for those who love car chases, an action-packed plot and, of course, cars.
- Gone in 60 Seconds
Seeing that the film’s main character has to steal 50 luxury cars in one night in order to pay off his brother’s debt, it is quite obvious that there are going to be some truly epic vehicles to admire throughout. The movie is jam-packed with cars like the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500, the1999 Porsche 911 Carrera, the 2000 Audi A6 and many more. If you haven’t seen this film already, we recommend that you add it to your bucket list! It is one of those legendary movies that real (gasoline) dreams are made of.
5.No Man’s Land
Although quite predictable, the original ‘No Man’s Land’, released in 1987, is well worth the watch if you consider yourself to be a bit car crazy. Chockfull of to-die-for Porsches, such as the 1975 Porsche 911 Turbo, the 1980 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS and the Porsche 356 B, this is a film that is sure to get any driving enthusiast raring to go.
Seeing as though so many of the beautiful vehicles in these movies are wrecked by the time the credits roll, one can only hope that our favourite petrol head heroes had car insurance! Although you may not be driving a car quite as valuable as the 1970 Dodge Charger in ‘The Fast and the Furious’, either way you should ensure that you are properly covered in the event of an accident.
Accidents are inevitable and can happen when you least expect it, which is why car insurance is so important to have.
