Recovery from alcohol is always possible

Speak your Mind: By Dr Guru Kistnasamy

Alcohol addiction can destroy individuals, personal relationships, partners and families. Alcoholism can lead to financial difficulties, breaking up of marriages, and increased stress and anxiety.

Physical symptoms include nausea, restlessness, shakiness, insomnia and sweating. In severe cases, it can lead to organ failure and death.

Recovery from alcohol is possible. It requires several steps to follow and a voluntary decision to do so. In order to achieve complete recovery, the following stages need to be taken into account: (Ref. psychcentral.com).

  • Acknowledge the problem: The first step is to acknowledge that your drinking is uncontrollable and that it is negatively impacting on your physical, emotional and mental health.
  • Learn about recovery: The next stage is to find a solution by learning about ways to recover. Talk to your doctor or psychologist who can advise you about different options such as counselling, medication or a rehabilitation facility.
  • Seek professional help: Some companies and most medical aids pay for treatment at a rehab centre. The advantage at enrolling at a rehab is that one has individual sessions, group sessions, medication and treatment by a team. A reputable rehab might have a doctor, nurse, psychologist, occupational therapist and social worker seeing the patient. The combination of different professional approaches ensures the success of recovery.
  • Relapse prevention.

After the stay at a rehab, the patient can return to his or her normal life again. Once outside, one has to resist the temptations of a relapse. Therefore support groups are available to address this.

It is important that the recovering alcoholic maintains a healthy lifestyle after discharge from a rehab in order to prevent relapsing. This includes maintaining a good family relationship, taking care of one’s health and being productive at work.

South Africa was recently described as the ‘drunkest country’ in Africa where about five billion litres of alcohol are consumed annually. The financial and social consequences to the country are shocking. Industries suffer through absenteeism, lost productivity, injuries and damage to property, etc. Families suffer through accidents and death resulting from drunken driving, interpersonal conflicts, sexual promiscuity, child neglect and other consequences.
