Glenhaven school serious about improving numeracy

Excited Glenhaven Secondary pupils who took part in a Bond Tables quiz aimed at improving numeracy.

Glenhaven Secondary School recently held a Bond Tables quiz in school as part of an initiative to improve the numeracy levels at school. The competition is held within each grade to identify the top pupils per grade.

Principal, Philip Reddy, said it is our hoped that these competitions will inspire other pupils at school to strive for excellence by mastering their multiplication tables.

“I was amazed at the schools in China where calculators are kept out of the schools until very late in their schooling years, which makes it imperative for pupils to master their Bond Tables.

“The mastering of multiplication tables was a very contentious issue when the concept of Outcomes Based Education was introduced in the country.  However, many teachers believe that there was no need for the tables to have been taken out of the system.

“The poor performance in mathematics is in a major way attributed to the pupils poor knowledge of the number system in general and their multiplication tables in particular.  Let’s hope that every initiative helps to improve the poor state of Maths in the country,” said Reddy.
