Armed robber arrested on Wick Street

Reaction Unit South Africa head, Prem Balram, seen with an alleged armed robber following a robbery incident at a Verulam cash for gold business.

An alleged cash for gold business robber was arrested on Wick Street, Verulam after a chase by members of Reaction Unit South Africa on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the suspect entered the store and closed the door behind him, before producing a firearm. He demanded gold from the store owner.

However, when the victim told him that there was no gold, the suspect began assaulting him with a firearm and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa head, Prem Balram, his members were dispatched to the said cash for gold business after receiving a report of an armed robbery.

“Upon arrival, it was established that one suspect entered the store and closed the door behind him. The victim claimed that the suspect was Indian however he was uncertain due to his disguising his appearance with a hoodie,” said Balram.

Meanwhile, witnesses reported seeing a man dressed in a brown hoodie and maroon pants fleeing from the business. It further emerged that while the suspect perpetrated the robbery, two of his accomplices remained outside the business.

In efforts to locate the suspects, RUSA officers patrolled the area and also received information that the suspects had fled into a bush behind the Verulam Library.

“Acting on that information, officers entered the dense bush and noticed two suspects hiding among the dense vegetation. As officers approached the suspects, they fled towards the railway line,”said Balram. Officers managed to apprehend one suspect who was found in possession of bank notes. His accomplice is still at large.
