Kannadhasan Cultural Awards sustain the Tamil language

Karshon Dhrmalingam, Karen Kisten, Bruce Pillay, Abheran Moodley, Segai Kiston (project director), Devashan Nayager, Yovani Naidoo and Vee Naidu.

One of the languages that are enshrined in South Africa is Tamil. Many ways are used to preserve this indigenous language and music is one of the most popular.  Musical groups and artists played a pivotal role in the promotion of this language through their artistic talent.

While South African artists write original songs, we still depend on India as our cultural hub to draw our inspirations so we can be in the mainstream internationally.

Artists all over the world including South Africa have always enjoyed singing the lyrical composition of India’s Poet Laureate Kavi Arasu Kannadhasan including South Africa.

Kannadhasan has written more than 6000 songs for the movie industry of India, not forgetting his many literature. October 17, 1981, is when the golden pen of the lyrical genius stopped writing. Executive member of the Phoenix Foundation Trust, Segai Kiston, missed the opportunity to meet with the great author due to his untimely demise.

However, Kiston enjoyed the privilege of being a member of the Kannadhasan family during which he pursued an award to be presented to artists in the promotion of the Tamil language in South Africa.

More than 50 artists over the years have received the Kannadhasan Cultural Award. This year was no different. Recipients have performed the works of Kannadhasan exceptionally well and gained high praise from the packed audience.

The Phoenix Foundation Trust, a non -profit organisation- which hosted this function has placed its gratitude to all those who showed their support which turned out to be a huge success.

Segai Kiston is still in contact with the Kannadhasan family to sustain the Tamil language in South Africa.
