The National Deployment, Tactical Response Team and Public Order Police made a breakthrough when they arrested four suspects at the KwaMashu Hostel, last night. The men were wanted for murder, attempted murder and house robbery.
Official police reports indicated that two unlicensed firearms, cellphone and jewellery were also recovered during their arrest. Police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane said that police officers were conducting routine crime prevention duties at the hostel when they received information regarding the suspects who were in possession of firearms and stolen goods.
“The police officers reacted immediately to the information that led to the arrest of the suspects. The arrested suspects, aged between 23 and 30, will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of murder, attempted murder, house robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” he said.
The suspects were linked to a murder and house robbery case that was reported at Duffs Road, over the weekend as well.
Lt Col Zwane added, “On July 9, 2016 at about 7pm, the victim was at her house with her sons when they were approached by a group of suspects at gunpoint. The suspects allegedly demanded cash and other goods from the victims. It is alleged that the suspects also shot two victims who sustained injuries and taken to hospital. The suspects took jewellery, cash and watches before they fled the scene on foot. One of the victims later died in hospital as a result of injuries she sustained. A case of murder, attempted murder and house robbery was opened at the KwaMashu police station.”
The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province.
