It is believed that five people have been shot and injured, one critically so, following a cash-in-transit robbery at the Whitehouse Shopping Centre in Phoenix, a short while ago.

While details regarding this incident are still unclear at this stage, it is believed that heavily armed suspects opened fire on a cash-in-transit vehicle and robbed a supermarket at busy complex.

According to local security company, Reaction Unit South Africa, shoppers were caught in the crossfire between armed guards and the suspects. A report posted on their Facebook page read, “Two boxes containing an undisclosed amount of cash, a bulletproof vest and a firearm were stolen from one of the security officers. The suspects fled the scene in a Nissan X Trail and a VW Polo.”

It is alleged that during the shootout, the driver of a BMW X5 was shot in the thigh and suffered massive blood loss.

“He managed to drive off but stopped his vehicle off in Glen Anil where he was assisted by passing motorists. Paramedics from several ambulance services were routed from the scene of the shooting to the injured man’s location. He was stabilsed at the scene before being transported to hospital in a serious condition,” the report further stated.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa, the SAPS, Metro Police and other private security companies are at the scene and are currently searching for the suspects.
