Alleged robber’s body found on river bank

A partially naked body of an alleged robbery suspect was recovered on a river bank in Riet River, Verulam on Saturday.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa head, Prem Balram, the discovery was made after his members received a tip-off on Friday that a mob had beaten a man to death on Thursday morning after he had allegedly robbed an individual for a lunch tin.

Balram said his members proceeded to the area and interviewed several residents who were reluctant to provide information fearing that they will be assaulted or even killed by those involved in the attack.

“One resident, however, confirmed that the man was killed near an abandoned vehicle and his body was later dragged through a dense bush. The resident could not provide an exact location of where the body had been dumped. Officers conducted an extensive search on Friday afternoon however the search had to be called off after sunset,” added Balram.

Determined to find the body, on Saturday morning officers contacted Cpt Rajen Munsamy of the Umhlali SAPS K9 Unit who dispatched the Durban K9 Search and Rescue and with the use of a specialized dog the search for the cadaver continued.

While searching the river bank separating Phoenix and Verulam, a member of public discovered the remains of the deceased and alerted officers.

The deceased, an unidentified man was found naked from the waste down. Verulam SAPS communications officer, Cpt Hendry Kistern, confirmed that a investigation into the murder is currently underway.
