The community of Cottonlands has been left angered following the gruesome rape of a 10-year-old physically challenged child in the area on Sunday. According to reports, the alleged rape suspect escaped death after residents captured and assaulted him for the heinous crime.
It is believed that the child was sent to the tuck-shop, which is rented by the suspect. While details remain fully unknown, it has been alleged that when the child arrived at the shop, she was first touched inappropriately by the suspect and then penetrated from both sides.
After committing the horrific crime, the suspect gave the victim a packet of chips, valued at 50 cents, a lollipop and R10. Residents said that the child, who was bleeding, reported the matter at home. The irate community went to the tuck-shop and tried to apprehend the suspect. He was beaten up, however he managed to escape.
Residents did give chase however he soon disappeared into the bushes. Since then, the tuck-shop was closed and some residents even helped themselves to the goods sold at the business. Spokesman of the South African Police Services, Maj Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said that a case of rape was being investigated at the Verulam SAPS. “The suspect fled the area and is being sought by the Phoenix FCS Unit as well,” he said.
